What is the Truman Scholarship?

The Truman Scholarship was established in 1975 in memory of the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. It awards scholarships to “persons who demonstrate outstanding potential for and who plan to pursue a career in public service.”

Each year, the Truman Scholarship awards roughly 60 college juniors scholarships. The program awards students as much as $30,000 to put toward graduation or professional school in service-related programs. It also makes them part of an organization that offers many development programs, such as Leadership Week and a year-long fellows program.

Eligibility requirements

Before applying for the Truman Scholarship, students must meet these eligibility requirements:

  • Be a full-time student in their 3rd year at a 4-year institution

  • Receive a nomination from the Truman Scholarship Faculty Representative at their school;

  • Rank in the top 25% of their class

  • Be a US citizen or a United States national from American Samoa.

  • Intend to attend graduate school and pursue public service as a career

The application

If a student is nominated for the Truman Scholarship, they’ll receive an email that provides them with application instructions.

Applicants will need to provide:

  • The nomination letter from their school

  • Essays on their plans for public service, leadership, and service in general

  • A proposal or policy idea covering a subject that interests them

  • 3 letters of recommendation, one should cover each of the following topics:

    • Leadership skills

    • Commitment to public service

    • Chances of academic success

  • A transcript from their school
